Dave Ellison

Hi! My name’s Dave and I am the sole operator of Splitter Guiding! Splitter is a small guiding service provider that is based in Squamish, BC. I offer exciting guided trips and thorough instruction that can be catered to your individual goals.

Most of the skiing and climbing trips that I lead take place in the mountains within the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and St'át'imc Nations territories. These span from what is called today as the North Shore mountains, parts of the Sunshine Coast, and all the way to the north near the South Chilcotins. You can learn more about the places you ski and climb using this Gaia map layer.

Since we will be spending a lot of time together, it’s probably best you learn a little about me. I grew up in Abbotsford, a town east of Vancouver on the banks of the Fraser River. Luckily Abbotsford is very close to Mt. Baker Washington(snowiest place on Earth!) where I learned to enjoy skiing bottomless powder snow. My travels looking for powder have led me to the next snowiest place on Earth, Japan. Throughout my 20’s I spent six winters living and skiing in Japan; three in Hakuba, Nagano Prefecture and another three winters in Hokkaido(the north island). If you are interested in a guided ski experience in Japan, find out more in the “trips” tab above.

I have also lived in Revelstoke as well as Nelson, BC. My knowledge of the Powder Highway is vast and I’d love to ski with you or your group throughout BC.

I have a passion for following and studying weather and snowfall patterns and use my experience to ensure we get the best skiing possible for the given conditions. When you ski with me it is more than just the local powder stash you will be privy to. I realize in the world of guiding, nuance and intuition can often be lost in translation. Clear communication is an important part of safe mountain travel and an aspect of my practice that I value highly. With patience I will always ensure you are heard and understand why we make the decisions we do together in the mountains.

If you’d like ideas to continue your learning experience in the mountains, I am always happy to share about my journey and to becoming a guide. I also consider myself a connoisseur of local cuisine and enjoy eating and drinking well wherever I go in the world. Life is about more than just powder skiing and rock climbing!
